You never know who’s watching.
That’s the truth I keep coming back to after years of building my brand and design agency. The early client who came back four years later with a fully funded referral. The woman who followed me from a past job and reached out five years later to rebrand her family’s business. The leads who circled back a year after initially reaching out because the timing finally aligned.
These moments happened because of connection.
Today I’m breaking down four visibility strategies that actually work because they’re rooted in human connection, not just optimization tactics. And if you’re tired of the marketing hamster wheel, this one’s for you.
Why Connection IS a Visibility Strategy
Let me be clear: I love a good SEO strategy. I love a solid content plan. These things work for me and consistently bring in clients. But we’ve reduced visibility to purely marketing tactics- ranking on Google, posting at the right time, going viral on Reels.
And while those matter, they leave out something critical, especially in our AI-saturated world: connecting with other humans.
Algorithms change constantly. You’ll always be switching up marketing strategies. But people don’t forget how you made them feel or how you supported them in a moment when they needed it.
The whole point of building your brand is creating that foundation so you’re top of mind for the right people over time. So when you’re not in the room, people are talking about you, excited about your brand, feeling connected to what you do.
Connection strategies are just as viable as any other marketing strategy. They’re all part of a cohesive brand that actually gets seen.
4 Connection-Based Visibility Strategies That Work
If you’re not sure how to start building connections for your brand- or maybe you’ve been living some bunker years since COVID (I totally get it)- here are four strategies that have genuinely moved the needle for me.
These work even better when you have a solid brand foundation built on strategy that fully understands your people’s minds and needs.
1. Serve Before You Sell
This one is truly everything.
You don’t have to wait until you’re launching to serve people. Answer a question in someone’s DMs. Offer a helpful resource. Be generous with your insights.
The more people you help without expectation, the more your name comes up when they’re ready to hire.
I’ve found that Threads is an incredible platform for practicing this. The community is ready to help, and you can start building genuine connections by showing up to serve rather than constantly selling.
Most people jump straight to selling all the time. If that’s how all your marketing runs, it’s going to be really challenging to build the actual connection piece that allows people to convert later.
Start small if you’re trying this out. One helpful answer in someone’s DMs is a start. One insightful thread response is a start.
2. Host Something (Like a Free Webinar or Masterclass)
This one pings off the first strategy because it’s also about serving, but I think it’s really underutilized for connection building.
When you host a free webinar or masterclass, you’re sharing value and building relationships. People see your face, hear your voice, feel your energy. It’s a much lower barrier than starting a podcast from scratch.
I’ve personally had multiple clients come from free educational webinars where I wasn’t selling anything. Maybe at the end I’ll mention how they can work with me or take things one step further, but I’m not spending the entire time pitching.
This was recently reconfirmed at Craft and Commerce, a conference hosted by Kit. Sam Vander Wielen presented on what strategies work to build email lists these days, and she emphasized free webinars and masterclasses. Several other sessions mentioned this as a major way of building connections and growing your list.
People want to learn. But they don’t just want what ChatGPT will regurgitate or what they can Google. They want to learn the way your brain thinks, the way you approach something- your framework, your structure, your strategy.
3. Support Someone Else’s Visibility First
Nominate someone for something. Share their offer. Send a referral their way.
Visibility is often a two-way street. When you help others be seen, you’re remembered as someone who shows up.
I was once featured in a magazine, and at the end they asked if I knew other local folks they could connect with. I sent over three people, including my facialist. The next time I went in for a facial, she had her magazine page cut out and framed on the wall. She was thrilled and ended up referring me to other people locally, even though we never worked directly together.
If I know your work is really good and you’re going to help other people, I’m going to refer you. I don’t need referral fees or payback- that’s not what it’s about. There’s something about that reciprocity that naturally comes back.
4. Create a Connection Ritual
Instead of one-off reach outs, build a habit that’s supportive and sustainable for you.
Some people love a monthly coffee chat. Others might send a voice memo shout-out every Friday. Maybe you attend one IRL event per quarter (that’s my ritual).
Rituals make visibility part of your rhythm. You get used to putting yourself out there, putting it on your marketing calendar, and it stops feeling like such a big lift.
I regularly attend specific events per quarter now that are part of my connection ritual. They help me grow, learn, and build visibility in a completely different way than my online presence does.
The Long Game of Visibility
We all want to see numbers go up. We want instant ROI. But sometimes ROI isn’t immediate.
People watch for years before they’re ready. They remember the small moment you showed up for them. They wait until the timing aligns.
Visibility is about being consistent, showing up, staying top of mind, and having a solid brand foundation. Then doing the small things: serve someone with no strings attached, send a voice memo to someone you admire, shout out someone’s offer, invite someone to coffee.
Small actions build brand equity over time.
If you’re at a point where you feel like nothing’s working or no one’s noticing, remember: you never know who’s watching.
Keep showing up. Be consistent. Be genuine. They’re going to remember.
And don’t forget- this works best in conjunction with your other marketing strategies. Don’t kick SEO and content to the curb. But add this human connection component, and you’ll build something that actually lasts.
